I'd love to pick up some more kits myself. I've built many kits for smaller things like video processors and low-power FM transmitters over the years, and I've always enjoyed working with them. This is a great thing, IMO.
Elecraft, founded by Swartz and chief technical officer Wayne Burthingy in 1998, sells a line of build-it-yourself shortwave transceivers in a range of capabilities, as well as build-it-yourself and assembled accessories including microphones, Morse code keys and antennas.
The company’s niche is designing and manufacturing high-performance amateur radios, and it’s one of just a handful of American companies in the segment. Its products have been featured in industry magazines all over the world, including journals from Japan.
Elecraft picks up in the spirit of the well-known electronics kit company Heathkit of Benton Harbor, Mich., which was bought by Zenith Electronics Corp., then Zenith Radio Corp., in the 1980s. The kit line was phased out soon after the acquisition in favor of the personal computer products line, said Swartz, though it had a loyal following.
