At the risk of sounding stupid, and the fact that I HAVE NOT used IRLP before, who has access codes (if any) for any of the area repeaters?

First, let me tell you that David Cameron, VE7LTD and the IRLP people will be at Dayton, in the Silver Arena, booth number 324. (click link for map). David is the designer of IRLP. Basically, the method is this. - Tune in to a local IRLP node (list below).
- Key up and say "N8BMB for IRLP" or something to that effect. Some nodes are recorded.
- After unkeying and a pause, key up again and push the node number of the node you want to reach. The nodes are usually four digits. Unkey and wait for a response from the node you're calling.
- When you're done with your QSO, simply key up and press "73" on your keypad to close the link.
- Although few mention it, it's best to also now announce that you're clear of the frequency, or simply standing by monitoring, so that those listening know the repeater is available again.
More info can be found on IRLP's FAQ page. They also have a Node status and info page. You can find out what nodes are currently connected; the entire list of authorized nodes and their frequencies; even nodes by U.S. Zip codes or Lat/Long values (a reason to try your new Garmin toy, Dennis! ;D ). One of the local IRLP nodes is in Windsor, Ontario. The VA3BBB repeater, node number 2170. The local frequencies for that repeater are listed as 147.390, with a CTCSS (PL) tone of 131.8. The repeater is being operated in REVERSE mode temporarily. That means you must listen on 147.990 and transmit on 147.390. Michigan has many also, but here's some of the closer ones to you: WB8NXP in Southfield, node number 4460 on the 70cm band. K8RPT in Maybee (Munroe), node 4529. W2PUT in Milan (4428) on the 70cm band. KP4E in Grosse Point Farms, node 4075. N8ENX machine in Howell (4341) on the 70cm band. WB8COX in Saline (4383) on the 220Mhz band. N8HEE in Charlotte, just off M69 (your antenna is that good, right??? ) Good luck!
