Beware, folks. A serious new nasty is circling the net, and it's moving fast.
WAREOUT claims to be an anti-spyware program that will seek out and remove any spyware your system has.
In actual fact, WAREOUT appears to be installing spyware of it's own.
Here's how it works, in a nutshell:
You visit an infected website, and this program begins to automatically install (without asking, of course). Once it's installed, it starts putting bogus entries into your registry. The entries are false. Garbage. Not valid.
Then, it pops up a window warning, "You have spyware that you don't even know about!" Of course, if offers to clean it for you. It starts to work on removing the bogus entries it just finished putting in there.
While you're distracted with this, it starts to install it's own spyware.
If you get wise to it, and start trying to stop the program from your PROCESS list, the software begins to delete files on your PC.
Read this link for a story about the effects of this trojan.
I'm running Windows XP, and I"m using M$ Anti-Spyware. MS AS features Real Time scanning for trojans and spyware, and was able to catch this trojan the moment it started installing on it's own. It's the only free program capable of doing this.
Ad-Aware SE is a great program, and can clean this trojan up after you get it, but it won't catch it on the way in. The exception is if you pay for the full version of Ad-Aware, which does include the Real-Time scanning feature.
But the best protection is your own wits.
Don't click on a popup that claims to have found spyware on your system. There are NO popups capable of discerning that.
Stick to reputable software for Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware, and keep them up to date! There's nothing worse than getting a good program and never updating it. Then when you get one, you say to yourself, "but how? I had an anti-virus program!" New bugs come out all the time. You have to stay on top of them.
Best FREE sofware:
M$ Anti-Spyware for spyware (Windows XP)
Ad-Aware SE and SpybotSD for spyware (Windows98)
AVG or AVAST for anti-virus.
Best PAID software:
Ad-Aware or SpybotSD for spyware.
Panda or Trend Micro for anti-virus.
Forget about Norton. It's a shadow of it's former self. It's bloated and ineffective anymore. Not worth the money, IMO.
Keep your wits about you, when you browse the net. Your own brain can keep you out of a lot of this garbage!
Safe Computing!
